The spirit of Jane Austen’s novels is evoked in this romantic comedy set in one of the places long frequented by the LGBTQ+ community. Andrew Ahn, whose previous films, spa night and Driveways, which premiered at Sundance and the Berlinale, brings to the screen a screenplay written by Joel Kim Booster. In Fire Islandthe comedian, whose Netflix will soon broadcast a performance on stage, stars with Bowen Yang, whom the admirers of the show Saturday Night Live now know very well.
A great movie, Fire Island ? No. We would even have liked a slightly less classic approach, with more murderous lines and even more scathing humor. That said, we nevertheless welcome this very frank desire to present a band of gay characters in all their diversity, even those falling under the cliché.
We will thus follow with a smile the adventures of these two best friends taking a different approach to their stay at the beach, one in search of conquests, the other, more romantic, in search of a real love affair. On their journey, meetings with sincere guys, others less so, discussions, a meeting point at a good friend’s house (Margaret Cho) with whom the gang is staying, the class struggle with richer people, and, for cement all that, the presence of Will (Conrad Ricamora), a bit like the Mr. Darcy of the story…
We are not talking here about a memorable holiday that we can talk about for years, but rather a sunny parenthesis, quickly seen, quickly forgotten.
Presented on the Hulu platform in the United States, Fire Island is available exclusively on Disney+ in Canada.
