In the Var, the fire which burned through 600 ha of forest is believed to be of accidental origin. It is no less a disaster for the fauna and flora and in particular for the Hermann’s tortoise.

A rescue operation was carried out in a Var forest devastated by flames. His goal: to find Hermann’s tortoises. Volunteers advance in line and inspect every nook and cranny. Notably “in the holes of dead cork oaks, the turtle will have an interest in hiding from the heat and predators”specifies Raymond Viola, coast guard, conservatory of natural spaces.

A turtle has just been found safe and sound among the ashes. It is handled with the greatest care. “She looks intact, she is fine”, describes Alexia Le Floch, project manager, turtle observation and protection station. A race against time is launched, to try to save as many people as possible.
