A very post-punk and new wave bass line, the high-pitched voice of its singer Lukie Lovechild, a coherent pop ensemble that is certainly lo fi and Do It Yourself which gives a little clumsy but very charming side: this is what could sum up Fire in the Rose Garden, the second album from Montrealers Night Lunch. But that’s not all. The record with multiple influences is like a vivid dream — strange and impalpable, yet which never really leaves us. During listening, we move from an emancipatory feeling (My Love Is a Rebel) to a desire to play (I Think You Love Her More Than Me) to the sound of very Beach Boys melodies, to a certain melancholy in which we like to wallow (Tonight) without any transition. Let us also highlight the participation of Marlee Kay in singing, notably on Flames of Love, which takes the record to darker depths, but still just as interesting and kitsch. In summary, Fire in the Rose Garden is a surprising object!
