Fire in Old Montreal | At least five people are still missing

The meticulous work of firefighters and the Montreal police continues Wednesday morning in the building on Place d’Youville ravaged by flames where the body of a second victim was found the day before. In total, at least five people are still missing.

The toll is still at two dead and five people missing following this major fire that occurred last Thursday in Old Montreal. “We cannot rule out that there may be other missing persons,” said Inspector David Shane, of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).

A second body was located and then extricated from the building around 5 p.m. Tuesday. This victim has not yet been identified. A first body had been extricated from the rubble last Sunday.

“It is not possible to provide an estimate of the time required to release the identity of this victim,” Shane told the media.

On-site crews are to remove the two chimneys from the heritage building during the day. “It is to secure the workplace of the responders. The SPVM drone will be deployed in the targeted areas,” added Martin Guilbault, Division Chief at the Montreal Fire Department (SIM).
