A huge fire has broken out on an oil tank in Crimea after it was hit by a drone, local authorities said.
Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvojayev posted videos and photos of the blaze on the Telegram app. He said the flames did not cause any injuries, but that the fire is of such magnitude that it will be difficult to extinguish.
Despite this, Mr. Razvojayev maintains that this will not interfere with the fuel supply in Sevastopol.
He did not specify whether the drone that caused the fire was Ukrainian.
Russia annexed Crimea, a peninsula in southern Ukraine and the Black Sea, in 2014. Russia’s annexation of Crimea is considered illegal by most countries in the world and President Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelensky does not hide that his country has been trying to reconquer the peninsula since the current Russian invasion.
The fire in this oil depot in Crimea comes the day after more than 20 cruise missiles were fired by Russia on Ukraine, killing at least 23 people. Almost all of the victims died when two missiles hit a building. Three children are among the dead.
The city of Sevastopol has been the subject of regular attack attempts with drones, especially in recent weeks.
Earlier this week, Governor Razvojayev reported that the Russian military destroyed a Ukrainian sea drone that attempted to attack the port and another exploded, smashing the windows of several apartment buildings, but not inflicting no other damage.
Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment on the oil tank fire. After previous attacks on Crimea, Kyiv stopped openly claiming responsibility for them, but stressed that the country had the right to strike any target in response to Russian aggression.
