Tuesday, August 13, marks three days since more than 600 firefighters have been battling the fire that is ravaging the northeastern suburbs of Athens. European aid is arriving. One victim has been found and a blaze is approaching the capital.
In the middle of an evacuation, a warehouse caught in the fire ends up exploding in Pendeli (Greece). Further into the village, in a thick plume of smoke, helpless residents try to put out the fire that spreads to the houses. The means are rudimentary and a strong wind fans the fire.
North of Athens, the fire is spreading over 30 km. For three days, it has been moving south and is at the gates of the capital. In the town of Halandri, there is the same desolation: a resident bursts into tears on the ground. At the end of the street, residents take turns to slow down the fire. Despite the arrival of firefighters in this town, a Moldovan woman in her sixties has died. More than 700 firefighters have been mobilized. Thousands of hectares have already burned.
