In Finland, part of the Russian gas would be flared. In the UK, postal workers go on strike and demand better wages.
In the midst of an energy crisis, Finland sees Russian gas go up in smoke. About forty kilometers from the Russian gas plant in Portovaya, a Finn filmed an uninterrupted flame. The image intrigues specialists who estimate that the equivalent of 10 million euros are burned every day. Gas which, before, would have been exported to Germany. Portovaya is located near the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline. If gas flaring is common, is this a consequence of the conflict in Ukraine or a technical problem? So far, Gazprom has refused to respond.
In Switzerland, if the gas runs out this winter, an emergency plan already provides that several infrastructures such as leisure centres, swimming pools or fitness centers will be the first to be affected. After the restrictions linked to Covid-19, a new blow could hit the sector which is already asking for compensation.
Postal workers are angry in the UK. More than 100,000 people are on strike and demanding better wages because inflation exceeds 10% and the electricity bill should double at the start of the school year. Feeling cheated, employees are already planning new walkouts.
