Energy: Finland is betting on the heat pump
Energy: Finland is betting on the heat pump – (France 2)
How to reduce your energy bill? Perhaps by investing in a heat pump. The Finns have led the way: 20% of the country’s heat needs are covered by heat pumps.
In the Finnish countryside, attached to wooden houses, heat pumps have been widely adopted by residents. In the country, there is no question of being cold at home. “We already have a lot of clothes when we go outside, so (…) the idea is to have a pleasant interior”, explains Matthieu Lavarde. With his partner Liisa Lavarde, they installed a heat pump. “It’s currently snowing outside, and inside it’s almost 24°C.” confides Matthieu, who ensures heating “at least”.
An efficient and less expensive process
The principle ? A compressor extracts the energy naturally present in the air, to heat water which circulates in the floor of the house. The heat created can also power fans. “Every night when it was below -15°C, the system worked perfectly”, assures Matthieu. An efficient process, and less costly in electricity than traditional electric radiators: 50 euros per month, compared to 700 euros previously. In just a few years, Finland has become one of the European countries most addicted to heat pumps. In 2023, the number of instillations will double again.
