It is a historic decision. Finland announced its candidacy for NATO on Sunday 15 May. The organization says it is ready to strengthen Finland’s security guarantees.
75 years of neutrality were buried by this decision, Sunday May 15. “Finland to apply for NATO membership“, said Sauli NiinistoPresident. In the process, the heads of NATO diplomacy met in Berlin and welcomed the strong signal sent to Putin. For them, thisdemonstrates that aggression does not pay”.
Finland, however, was committed to its policy of non-alignment. The war in Ukraine swept away this principle. The country shares 1,300 km of border with Russia. Finland’s NATO membership became necessary for a large majority of the population. Putin regretted a mistake by Finland and warned the Finnish president against a possible retaliation. The country’s candidacy must still obtain Turkey’s approval to obtain the unanimity of NATO members. Sweden could quickly apply in turn.
