A study from “The Lancet” reveals that, even short-term, exposure to fine particles can be very harmful to health. Between 2000 and 2019, a million people died each year due to brief exposure to these particles.
Car traffic, fires, wood heating: so many exposures to fine particles which, even short-term, can be very harmful to health. This is what a study from “The Lancet” has just revealed. Breathe, even for a few hours, during a pollution peak, would increase the risk of hospitalizations and premature deaths. A million people are estimated to have died each year between 2000 and 2019 due to brief exposure to these particles.
Particularly increased mortality in Asia
“The problem with these microparticles is that the smaller it is, the further it goes in the body, and particularly in the respiratory tract. And so in patients who are asthmatic, or who have chronic bronchitis, a disease called COPD, this will be able to cause worsening of these diseases., explains Clairelyne Dupin, pulmonologist at Bichat hospital in Paris. Diseases and particularly increased mortality in Asia, but also in Africa and Europe. If the results are alarming, the researchers point out that there are solutions, such as avoiding driving during pollution peaks.
