Financial year 2021-2022 | Quebec’s deficit heavier than expected

(Quebec) Quebec’s deficit will finally have been a little heavier than announced last spring according to the consolidated financial statements for the 2021-2022 financial year unveiled on Wednesday.

In a press release, Finance Minister Eric Girard announced the publication of the government’s public accounts for the 2021-2022 fiscal year.

The total deficit recorded for the year ending March 31, 2022 amounts to $772 million after the payment of $3.6 billion to the Generations Fund.

This deficit turns out to be larger than what was initially announced last June.

In the monthly financial transactions report, dated June 30, 2022, the government’s preliminary financial statements as of March were shown.

It was reported at the time that Quebec’s budget balance showed a deficit of $294 million.

In the press release published Wednesday by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Girard affirms that the results for the year 2021-2022 “show that the economic recovery has been vigorous in Quebec”.

However, he warns against the fact that “the next few months will be more difficult for all the economies of the world”, but that Quebec can face this turbulence with solid public finances.
