The Minister of Higher Education, Pascale Déry, intends “to act and intervene” in the face of the “financial inequity” that exists in the university network, while the University of Quebec (UQ) is demanding funding of an additional $100 million per year.
“We have to value French-speaking universities and the French-speaking network in Quebec and I have every intention of working on that,” she said, when questioned in the Blue Room of the National Assembly of Quebec by two deputies. of Quebec solidaire.
In interview with The duty, UQ President Alexandre Cloutier pleaded for an end to the chronic underfunding of the network, which includes 10 institutions, as well as for the reduction of the gap in the number of university graduates between Ontario and Quebec.
“There are tuition fees set for students that are regulated and deregulated. We have bilateral agreements with Switzerland, France and Belgium, underlined the minister. I look at all these scenarios and I have already said that I intend to intervene to try to restore this financial inequity within the network”.
The latter did not want to comment on the amount of 100 million dollars claimed by the UQ. A call for briefs was launched as part of a review of the university funding policy and Minister Déry wants to “do things in order”.
“We are going to analyze these various briefs to the ministry and we will have the opportunity, during the consultations that will take place during the review of the funding policy, to see to all of this,” she said.
