Good news for Basque speakers. Since the beginning of August, the Netflix streaming platform has been offering several of its films and series in the Basque language. In effect, it is now possible to see five films and series with dubbing in Basque, and fourteen with subtitles in Basque. Something to give a smile to the activists of the “Pantailak Euskaraz” movement (“the screens in Basque”) who have been campaigning for a year in this direction. “It’s good newssmiles Alex Aginalde, spokesperson for the movement. It is necessary that we have the possibility of seeing the greatest successes of the cinema in Basque“. For the moment, the repertoire is meager, with animated films in particular, such as the latest “Ninja Turtles” released this year.
There is still much to do for the movement that hopes to see to develop this type of proposals, whether on Netflix and elsewhere. “On the Spanish catalog of Amazon Prime, for example, we already have several films that are not on the French one, so we hope that they will end up being offered as well.“. The movement is also discussing with Disney+ but without much success for the moment.
They have posted petitions and hope that the platforms will continue to offer more programs in Basque, and in particular old films for which dubbing and subtitling already exist.
