Figure skating: Canadian athlete accused of sexual assault

Canadian figure skating champion Nikolaj Sorensen has been accused of sexual assault by a former American skater.

Thursday, the daily USA Today has learned that the 34-year-old athlete is the subject of an investigation by the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner of Canada (BCIS) in connection with this matter. The American media got its hands on a copy of documents sent by the organization to the US Center for SafeSport.

The assault allegedly occurred in April 2012, in Connecticut, when the complainant was 22 years old and Sorensen was still competing for his country of origin: Denmark.

The skater became a Canadian athlete in 2019 and obtained his citizenship in 2021. With his partner, Quebecer Laurence Fournier Beaudry, Sorensen is the reigning Canadian ice dancing champion.

The couple obtained ninth place at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2022. They must participate in the Canadian Championships from January 8 to 14 in Calgary.

The identity of Sorensen’s alleged victim has not been released. The woman would today be a figure skating coach.
