Emmanuelle Beguinot, director of the national committee against smoking, was the guest of 12/13 info, Tuesday November 28. She returned to the announcements of a new plan to combat smoking in France.
The government has presented a new plan against smoking. This notably provides for a gradual increase in the price of a packet of cigarettes to reach 13 euros in 2026. For Emmanuelle Beguinot, director of the national committee against smoking, “fiscal policy (…) is what is most effective”. “It is essential to have an increase policy in particular to dissuade young people from starting to smoke and also to encourage people, who do not have a lot of income, to stop”details Emmanuelle Beguinot, who reminds us that we stop “for his health” and for his wallet.
“It is insufficient”
The increases announced are of the order of 20 cents per year. For the national committee against smoking, “It is insufficient”. “We are not reaching a level of increase that would be necessary to achieve the objectives that have been set. At this level, there is a disappointment on our part”, regrets the director of the committee. Asked about the amount of an increase “satisfactory”she answers : “There was a fiscal trajectory that had been established, and which, excluding inflation, provided that the price of a pack of cigarettes would be 16 euros. The United Kingdom will reach 18 euros.”
