Fifa will guarantee 28,000 euros to each player

The International Football Federation has decided to allocate part of the global allocation to the players itself without going through negotiations between federations and selected.

An unprecedented guarantee hailed by the players’ union FIFPro. The 736 participants in the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand (July 20 to August 20) will receive at least 30,000 dollars each (28,000 euros) announced Thursday, June 8, the International Football Federation (Fifa). The novelty lies in the fact of reserving part of the overall envelope for the remuneration of each player, rather than letting the federations use the endowment – at least 1.56 million dollars (1.46 million euros) guaranteed to each of the 32 qualifying nations – entirely as they see fit.

For this World Cup, the world football body has confirmed the tripling of the overall allocation of the tournament compared to the 2019 edition in France, with 152 million dollars (141.8 million euros) distributed in total, ten times more than for the 2015 World Cup in Canada. A real leap forward that Fifa wishes to share with the actresses of the game.

251,500 euros for each world champion player

The players eliminated during the group stage will therefore receive 30,000 dollars, an amount increased to 60,000 (55,900 euros) for the round of 16 finalists, 90,000 (83,900 euros) for the quarter-finalists, 165,000 (153,700 euros) for the losers of the small final, 180,000 (167,600 euros) for the third, 195,000 (181,000 euros) for the finalists and 270,000 (251,500 euros) for the future world champions. By comparison, Fifa recalls that in its 2022 study on the salaries of professional female players, the average annual remuneration was 14,000 dollars (13,000 euros).

“They listened to the voice of the players, and we took a step towards greater gender equality at the highest level of our sport”welcomed the FIFPro union in a press release, recalling the mobilization last fall of more than 150 internationals so that at least 30% of the allocation to the federations is directly granted to the players.

Alongside the “performance-based fund” (110 million dollars) intended for the participating nations – federations and players -, Fifa will distribute 30.7 million dollars (28.6 million euros) for the preparation of the tournament and 11.5 million dollars (10.7 million euros) for clubs that release their internationals.
