“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of two Swedes in Brussels near the stadium where Belgium hosted Sweden (…) On behalf of Fifa and the football community, I send my deep condolences to the families and friends of the victims. Our thoughts are with the people of Belgium and Sweden, their respective national teams and their federations,” wrote the head of the International Football Federation on Instagram this Tuesday, October 17.
This follows the gun attack which left two Swedish victims near the city center of Brussels, a few hours before a Euro-2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden at the stadium King Baudouin. The man suspected of having carried out this attack was fatally injured during a police operation on Tuesday morning.
The Belgium-Sweden match was stopped following the attack on Monday October 16 when the two teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period. The stadium audience remained confined for more than two hours as a security measure.
