The latest figures from the institute show a continued erosion of radio listening in general. But among listeners, more and more are listening on their phones.

Médiamétrie takes stock of the 2022-2023 season. According to the institute, seven out of ten French people listen to the radio every day, which represents 39.4 million daily listeners. It’s still huge, but the decline is constant, year after year. In 2021, there were over 40 million listeners every day.

Half of 13-24 year olds listen to the radio every day

The average listening time is two hours and 36 minutes. In radio, the most exposed time remains the morning, which is equivalent to “prime time” on TV: between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., 44% of French people listen to the radio. During the week, the peak audience is measured at 8 a.m., with more than 12 million listeners.

The most loyal are between 35 and 59 years old, 80% of them listen to at least one station every day, and in all styles: general, musical, thematic. But the surprise comes from young people: more than half of 13-24 year olds are daily listeners.

Habits linked to place of residence

According to Médiamétrie figures, people listen to the radio almost as much at home as outside, with just a very slight advantage outside the home, mainly in the car. At 5 p.m., the radio is mainly listened to in the vehicle. Habits are different depending on where we live and the station we listen to. A listener from the Ile-de-France region, for example, is more at home, just like a general practitioner fan.

Furthermore, nine million people listen to local radio, out of the thousand accessible in France. It is in Pays de la Loire that they are most followed: 78% of residents connect every day and for two hours and 41 minutes. Ile-de-France is the least radiophilic region.

More and more listeners on smartphones

Digital audiences have grown by 40% in five years. Today, more than nine million French people listen to the radio on digital media, the vast majority on a smartphone.

Podcasts are also gaining ground year after year: there are now 20 million monthly followers. Among 15-24 year olds, 50% listen to it. The favorite themes are, in order: humor, current events, music, news items and sport. But this data concerns all podcasts, both replays of existing shows and specific creations for digital. “Native” content only represents 2% of the listening volume of audio offers.
