After the explosion of energy prices, large numbers of business bankruptcies were feared. However, the number of companies insolvent over the past year is lower than expected.
The worst-case scenario did not ultimately materialize for businesses. Liquidations and receiverships remain fewer than before the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Banque de France. A total of 45,120 failures were counted between April 2022 and March 2023, i.e. 12% less than the total recorded between April 2018 and March 2019. “We are still seeing a sharp reduction in the number of business failures compared to the Covid period”notes Jean-Eudes du Mesnil du Buisson, general secretary of the CPME.
A dreaded increase in 2023
According to a CPME survey from October 2022, almost one in ten small business owners were considering stopping their activity due to soaring energy prices. But if France has not experienced multiple bankruptcies at this stage, credit insurance Allianz-Trade is betting on more business failures in 2023 than in 2019.
