France has 68.4 million inhabitants on January 1, 2024, according to the 2023 demographic report from INSEE, consulted Tuesday January 16. This represents an increase of 0.3% compared to last year.

INSEE explains that despite the drop in births in 2023, there were – in return – fewer deaths. More precisely, 678,000 babies were born last year, which is 6.6% less than in 2022 and almost 20% less than in 2010, the year of the last peak in births. This is a first in France since the Second World War.

Faced with this, 631,000 people died in France in 2023, or 6.5% less than in 2022. This drop follows three years of high mortality, due in particular to the Covid-19 epidemic. Note that 66.1 million inhabitants live in mainland France and 2.2 million in the five overseas departments.

1.68 children per woman

Concerning the total fertility index (TFR), it stands at 1.68 children per woman. A number “in sharp decline” after 1.79 in 2022. At its last peak, in 2010, it stood at 2.03. To return to a level as low as that of 2023“we have to go back to 1993-1994”.

This fertility rate drops in 2023 for women in all age groups, including those aged 30 or over, who were not or only slightly affected by the decline in fertility in the years preceding the health crisis. . INSEE also notes that in 2023, the average age at motherhood will rise, as in 2022, to 31.0 years, compared to 29.5 years twenty years earlier.

Another lesson which appears in the demographic report, that of the life expectancy of men which reached 80 years for the first time. “In 2023, life expectancy at birth rises to 85.7 years for women and reaches, for the first time, 80.0 years for men.” With 242,000 celebrations, the number of marriages remains at a high level in 2023. The number of PACS concluded in 2022 stabilizes at nearly 210,000.
