The authorities are raising the alarm about the festive gatherings of the elderly. In some departments, the incidence rate for people over 65 is on the rise.

Rediscover life before the Covid. That of dance floors, senior clubs, or pétanque grounds. Happiness for retirees. But these gathering worries while the incidence rate of over 65s soars in some departments.

At the bridge club in Nantes, the players savor their reunion, but with caution. “We spent more than a year playing on the internet (…) bridge is a contact game“, testifies an enthusiast, who had to show his sanitary pass and mask himself before entering.

But not everyone is so careful. The Pays de la Loire health agency lists gatherings with a relaxation of barrier gestures and warns of worrying incidence rates among the over 65s: 198 per 100,000 inhabitants in Vendée, twice as many as for the total population, 192 in Maine-et-Loire and 180 in Sarthe. In the Creuse, the authorities note contaminations during tea dances, balls, birthday parties or collective meals. The incidence rate in 60-69 year olds exceeds 200. The risk of these gatherings: forgetting the barrier gestures. Because although the vaccine protects well against serious forms of the disease, it does not eliminate the risk of transmission of the virus.
