(Wood Islands) A ferry continued to burn on Saturday, between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, after a fire was declared in the engine room on Friday morning.

Owner Northumberland Ferries said efforts to put out the blaze were abandoned on Friday evening and crew and firefighters were evacuated from the ship for safety reasons.
The company said smoke can still be seen billowing from the ship’s smokestacks, more than 24 hours later.
She also said the Canadian Coast Guard is standing by the ship to offer assistance while an environmental agency is on hand to monitor the situation.
Northumberland Ferries has canceled all services between Caribou, Nova Scotia, and Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island this weekend.
About 230 passengers were evacuated from the holiday island as it approached Wood Islands shortly after 11 a.m. Friday. No injuries were reported, but the company warned it was unsure whether it would be able to recover the approximately 80 vehicles and 3 commercial trucks that were on board.
