Leylah Fernandez was beaten 6-4, 6-4 by defending Indian Wells champion Paula Badosa on Tuesday.

The Spaniard reached the quarter-finals after an hour and 45 minutes.

The 18th-seeded Fernandez was broken three times including the fifth game of the second set, where she erased a 0-40 deficit.

Fifth seed Badosa overcame seven double faults, including one in the final game.

After that, she added a winner and then ended the match with a cross shot, which Fernandez failed to bring back into play.

The 19-year-old Lavalloise came to California having triumphed in Mexico the previous week.

Aged 24, Badosa will next face Veronika Kudermetova, 24th in the world.

Third-seeded Iga Swiatek prevailed 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Angelique Kerber. Polish, Swiatek triumphed at Roland-Garros in 2020.

Dabrowski’s compatriot, Denis Shapovalov and the Indian Rohan Bopanna lost their flag against the Mexican Santiago Gonzalez and the Frenchman Édouard Roger-Vasselin, 4-6, 6-4 and 4-10.

Shapovalov and his partner shone with 10 aces against just one for their rivals, but they also committed nine double faults, six more than their opponents.
