Fernandez beaten in the first round in San Diego

Laval’s Leylah Fernandez was beaten in the first round at the San Diego Open on Tuesday, losing 6-2, 6-2 to eighth-seeded Daria Kasatkina.

Kasatkina was expeditious. The duel ended after just 59 minutes of play.

The Russian also defeated the Canadian in Rome in May.

“Dasha is an incredible player. She has improved so much over the years, Fernandez remarked. I watched her perform on television when I was a junior. To see her now in the top-10 and performing so well this year is truly inspiring.

“I think today she showed how well she can play. She didn’t make many mistakes. I, unfortunately, have done several.”

Kasatkina prevailed 5-1 for breaks against Fernandez, 39th in the world.

Donna Vekic, Sloane Stephens and Karolina Pliskova were also among the day’s winners.

Canadian Bianca Andreescu has her place in the second round.

She will play there against Robin Montgomery or Coco Gauff, sixth headliner.

Should Andreescu reach the quarter-finals, she could face favorite Iga Swiatek.

In doubles, second seeds, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her Mexican partner Giuliana Olmos, trailed 4-2 in the first set against Sabrina Santamaria and Kaitlyn Christian before play was suspended.

After a long break, the action resumed and Dabrowski and Olmos looked invigorated. They won the first set 7-5 and easily won the second 6-1.

In the quarter-finals, the tandem will cross swords with a duo composed of Chan Hao-Ching and Lucie Hradecka.

Earlier, also in the round of 16, the Canadian pair of Rebecca Marino and Carol Zhao lost 6-2, 6-4 to Sofia Kenin and Liudmila Samsonova.

This is the WTA’s first tournament in San Diego since 2015.
