A 51-year-old mother died in hospital from injuries inflicted on her late Sunday evening in a single-family home in Saint-Basile-le-Grand, in Montérégie.
A 53-year-old man was arrested by police upon their arrival at the residence on rue Ménard. He is suspected of murder, but as of Monday morning, the nature of the criminal charges to be brought against him had not yet been determined.
The Richelieu-Saint-Laurent intermunicipal police agency reported receiving a call around 11:30 p.m. inviting them to go to the house because an altercation had taken place. The call was made by one of the woman’s two children who were both present at the residence at the time of the incident.
When police officers arrived, they found that the woman had serious injuries. Maneuvers aimed at keeping her alive were carried out, but they were ultimately in vain.
According to police, the suspect and the victim had known each other for some time, but their relationship had not yet been clarified as of Monday morning.
As for the two young people who were on the scene, one is an adult while the other is a minor. They were to be met on Monday by investigators from the Régie intermunicipale de police de Richelieu-Saint-Laurent who were to go to the site in the company of forensic identification technicians.
