Federal Housing Advocate confirms lack of affordability and availability

The new Federal Housing Advocate confirms the problems of housing affordability and the lack of options available for housing, particularly for low-income households, across the country.

The new Federal Defender, Marie-Josée Houle, appointed in February 2022, has thus unveiled her 2022-2023 annual report.

It is largely based on online submissions to it from people who are having trouble finding housing, tenant advocacy groups, and others. She also visited several localities in the country.

For example, she notes that over the past year, housing unaffordability was cited as an issue in 77% of public submissions.

Several recommendations are addressed to the various levels of government, in particular that of ensuring that income security programs provide sufficient income for housing.

At the federal level, although a national strategy on housing has already been adopted, which recognizes the right to housing, it suggests creating a working group and also involving the ministries of Health, Justice, Veterans combatants and immigration, for example.
