Applications for grants under the federal government’s Incentive for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program saw a sharp increase in the first half of the year.
According to data from Transport Canada obtained by Automotive News Canada95,775 applications were made in the country during this period, compared to 45,669 in the first half of 2023.
Quebec alone accounts for 55% of these requests (52,496), far ahead of Ontario (18,458) and British Columbia (17,695), which closes the podium.
The Tesla Model Y largely dominates the list of the most popular electric models in terms of these grant applications with 16,987 claims, ahead of the Tesla Model 3 (6,643) and the Hyundai Kona EV (4,943). Among plug-in hybrids, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV reigns almost unchallenged with 6,187 applications, ahead of the Ford Escape PHEV (3,211).
It should be noted that the federal government is granting an after-tax rebate of $5,000 on the purchase or 48-month lease of a new electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle capable of traveling more than 50 km.
