At 29, Samuel Umtiti is now free. FC Barcelona announced, Friday, June 30 in a press release, the end of its collaboration with the French international defender, whose contract would run until 2026. The 2018 world champion, scorer in the semi-finals against Belgium, leaves a rather successful season (25 games and staying in Serie A) on loan to Lecce.
Arrived in Barcelona in 2016, Umtiti quickly imposed himself there, winning two Ligas in 2018 and 2019. But the central defender trained in Lyon, after his return from the World Cup in Russia, suffered numerous injuries which continually kept him away from the close. He only played 49 games between 2018 and 2022 with Barça, but finally found his rhythm in Puglia this season. Umtiti will now seek to continue this rebound, hoping to get closer to the Blues, four years after his last cap.
