There is an air of an endless day in the National Assembly. After having passed in pain the bill on the purchasing power ofyears the night of Tuesday 26 to Wednesday 27 Julydebated night and day at the Palais Bourbon, the deputies still sat in the Hemicycle on Thursday 28 July.

The subject is less sensitive since it is a question of taking stock of the French presidency of the European Union. But fatigue has already set in after three weeks of work and just over a week before the summer break.
In the corridors of the National Assembly, some deputies have drawn features, and dark circles under their eyes attest to the pace of work. “We say hello or good evening to you, we don’t really know anymore“, slips a deputy to journalists crossed in the corridors of the Bourbon palace. After three weeks of debates and several sleepless nights, the troops are exhausted, assures the rebellious deputy Alexis Corbière: “You feel like you’re in a tunnelhe confides. A rhythm frantic: this is why some deputies get carried away, according to Alexis Corbière: “Gather in the same room 577 men and women of character at three o’clock in the morning, who talk about subjects as passionate as inequalities, obviously, you create an atmosphere which can give the impression that it is heating up.“
Most of the deputies contacted by franceinfo assure that they expected this pace of work and do not want to complain given their good working conditions. But others, off the microphone, empty their bag. “It’s a hell of a beat“, deplores a new National Rally deputy who had to postpone his vacation. He confides that he fell asleep in his car when he was expected on a television set. “In session, we are less forceful, less lively“, assures this deputy.
For ecologist Sandra Regol, there is an urgent need for reform. “Sitting for twenty hours in a row and you study texts, you say to yourself that democracy is no longer effective in the last hours“, underlines the deputy.
“Overall, we need to think about another organization of our sequences, of our calendar, to achieve parliamentary work that is thoughtful, enlightened, finally, that it is the best possible.”

The executive has already learned a lesson from this first summer sequence: at the start of the school year, parliamentarians will not sit until October. There will therefore be no extraordinary session in September, a first for twenty years. “VSa will allow us not to rest in September, but to work to prepare the bills that will pass from October“, underlines the deputy of the majority Paul Midy, who estimates that, during the past weeks, the deputies have “sometimes builds compromises live in the hemicycle“.
“It’s even better when you can make compromises and good discussions with reasonable opposition before arriving in the hemicycle“, thus observes the deputy. Discussions will be necessary before the return from the start of the school year in October of an explosive reform: that of unemployment insurance.
