(Saint-Charles-De-Bellechasse) A person lost his life in a violent collision between a vehicle and a heavy truck Wednesday at the end of the day in the small municipality of Saint-Charles-de-Bellechasse, near Lévis, in the Chaudière-Appalaches region.
The authorities were notified around 5 p.m. of this face-to-face meeting on Route 279.
“This was a vehicle traveling southbound 279 when, for some unknown reason, it deviated from its lane and crashed into the 53-foot heavy truck traveling in the opposite direction,” said Sergeant Béatrice. Dorsainville, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
The person driving the vehicle died, but the impact of the accident was so violent that it was not immediately clear whether the victim was male or female.
“This person was possibly alone in the vehicle at the time of the facts”, however specified the spokesperson for the SQ.
The weather forecast was for light snow during the evening in the region, but a much darker scenario was not excluded to explain this tragedy.
“We do not exclude the thesis of the voluntary gesture. It is a hypothesis that is possible among many others, ”explained Sergeant Dorsainville.
An SQ police officer specializing in collision investigation was called to analyze the scene and route 279 was closed to traffic between highway 20 in Beaumont and route 218 in Saint-Charles-de-Bellechasse on time of the on-site investigation.
As for the truck driver, he did not suffer serious injuries.
The SQ investigation is continuing.
