A 43-year-old driver was killed on Wednesday morning after his vehicle struck a tree in the Lac-à-la-Tortue sector in Shawinigan.
Extrication clamps were needed to get the man out of his cockpit.
If the 43-year-old man was found only Wednesday morning around 9 a.m., the collision could have taken place much earlier, either on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday or even Tuesday evening, at the corner of the rue du Village. and rang St-Mathieu.
According to a witness who observed the intervention of the emergency services, the police, firefighters and paramedics had difficulty in freeing the vehicle, barely visible, from the woods. The latter unfortunately found its inanimate occupant.
Not the first accident
It would not be the first accident to occur in the area. Supporting evidence, a cross installed a few years ago in memory of a victim at the corner of rang Saint-Mathieu and the road to Lac-à-la-Tortue.
According to a woman who lives in the area, dozens of accidents, more or less serious, occur each year.
The municipal councilor of the sector, Louis-Jean Garceau, is well aware of the danger. He also wants the speed limit to be reduced to 50 km, while it is currently 80.
“About ten days ago, I submitted a request to the traffic committee of the City of Shawinigan to slow down the corner of Lac-à-la-Tortue at the entrance to Saint -Narcissus towards the village. We also want to put a stop-and-go in this direction. That is one accident too many. The ministry must take our request quickly, ”explained Louis-Jean Garceau.
The file will therefore be submitted to the Quebec Ministry of Transport.
An investigation will be conducted to shed light on the circumstances of this tragic accident.
