“The car was completely crushed, like a pancake. In my 27-year career, I have rarely seen such a brutal impact,” suggested the director of the KamEst Fire Department, Robin Laplante.

The incident occurred around 7 a.m. Thursday morning in the small municipality of Bas-Saint-Laurent. The motorist, who was traveling on rang Saint-Gérard Est, was violently struck at the intersection of Route 289, from the side, by the trucker who was traveling northbound.

“It was only after a few minutes of searching that we ended up finding the car in the ditch, hidden by the load of lumber from the flatbed truck that had overturned,” explained Mr. Laplante.

The paramedics who arrived on the scene could only note the death of Geneviève Lavoie, the 28-year-old woman from Rivière-du-Loup who was alone in the car.

Relatives in shock

The news had the effect of a bomb in the entourage of the young woman, and the messages of love swept on social networks.

“His laugh and his smile were contagious. She made me feel good. She made us all feel good. Words fail me…”, confided to the Log Anne-Renée Noël, a good friend and former colleague of Geneviève Lavoie.

Geneviève Lavoie had been employed by Tourisme Rivière-du-Loup since May. His colleagues wanted to highlight his brief passage in their lives.

“It’s with hearts in pieces and souls in mush that life forces us to say goodbye to you, Geneviève… The office, silent by your absence, is a real heartbreak for each of us… “, they wrote on Facebook.

An improved road

According to a consensus between the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) and the KamEst fire safety service, the 28-year-old woman was blinded by the sun at the time of the accident. The configuration of the road would therefore not be at issue in this case.

It must be said that this is not the first time that a fatal collision has occurred at this location. In 1997, an impact between a truck transporting wood and a car killed five people at the same intersection.

The range was at the time below the level of Route 289, which reduced the visibility of motorists traveling there. The Ministry of Transport has since taken corrective measures, assures Mr. Laplante.

The driver of the truck also suffered serious injuries, but his life is not in danger.
