Fatal accident in Granby: stuck in his vehicle on fire

A motorist burned to death in his vehicle following an accident of incredible violence involving a heavy truck on Friday morning in Granby, Montérégie.

The victim’s sport utility vehicle (SUV) and semi-trailer truck caught fire after the impact, which occurred around 8:15 a.m. on Route 137, between Principale Street and 11e Rang.

“It is still under investigation, but one of the two vehicles would have deviated from its trajectory to find itself in the opposite direction a few moments before the collision occurred,” said Marc Farand, spokesperson for the Granby police.

Witnesses tried to come to the aid of the people involved, but the heat that emanated from the two vehicles was such that no one was able to get to them.

The tractor-trailer driver, a 67-year-old man from Drummondville, was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The person driving the SUV died at the scene. The body was so charred that the emergency services do not know at this time whether it is a man or a woman.

A portion of Route 137 has been completely closed to traffic to allow collision investigation specialists from the Granby police to do their job.
