Fashion: fast fashion brands in the government’s sights

A bill, presented Monday March 4 to the National Assembly, attacks fast fashion brands and their environmental impact. In particular, it provides for penalties of up to 10 euros fine per item sold.
With their slashed prices and their oversized catalogs, fast fashion brands are riding the coattails of success. In a few days, they could be sanctioned with penalties to compensate for their environmental impact. Three main brands, which list thousands of items, are in the government’s sights: the British brand Primark and the Chinese giants Shein and Temu.
“Massive pollution of our environment”
“When we buy from these sites, we know what we are doing, and we contribute to massive pollution of our environment. These products are sent by plane directly to consumers”, comments Anne-Cécile Violland, Horizons MP and author of the bill, which will be presented Monday March 4 to the National Assembly. This provides for penalties of up to 10 euros fine per item sold, and a total ban on advertising. 100 billion items of clothing are sold each year worldwide, twice as many as 20 years ago.
