The matter seemed settled: the CD should gradually establish itself in the pantheon of music. But it is enjoying a new lease of life. The music industry has made several marketing choices to make it attractive.

We thought it was almost dead, pushed out between the return of vinyl and the advent of streaming. Error: the CD is still running. In France, more than 10 million CDs were sold last year, twice as many as vinyls. Those under 35 are the primary buyers. “The price of vinyl has exploded since it became fashionable. The solution to supporting artists is to buy CDs“, explains Maxime Hauville.

It sometimes costs up to 45 euros for a vinyl compared to 15 euros for a CD. Despite its decline, it is the second largest source of income for music. “What contributes to this relaunch is that you can easily buy your CD online. And above all you have direct to fan, online artist stores who sell their own objects themselves.“, explains Yacine Bouzidi, director of Antipodes Music and member of SNEP. To involve fans, certain artists have innovated: bold prices, original packaging, the CD becomes a collector’s item. Last year, the turnover of the compact disk peaked at 97 million euros in France.
