Fanny Ardant and Gérard Depardieu, the mythical couple of French cinema back in a drama by Jean Becker

The Green Shutters paints the portrait of Jules Maugin, a sacred monster of cinema, at the height of his glory in the 1970s. A twilight chronicle of the life of an aging actor who, despite his notoriety and his entourage, very often finds himself faced with his solitude . This drama marks the reunion of one of the most legendary duos of French cinema: Gérard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant.

The new film by Jean Becker is adapted from a novel by Belgian author Georges Simenon, published in 1950. If the plot of the book takes place in his time, the director of The killer summer or evenEliza chose to set his feature film two decades later.

A grumpy old actor, embittered and worn out by excess… He is the main character of this dramatic comedy. Despite the presence of his dresser, his driver, his best friend and his admirers, Jules Maugin is dying of loneliness. The only thing to make his existence less monotonous is mad love for his playing partner. Unfortunately, Jeanne, played by Fanny Ardant, rejects him. He then returns to his vacation home, but with another, young woman, his blower. The good times in the sun with her allow her to (re)taste a sweeter life. Or almost.

This drama marks the reunion of two stars of French cinema: Fanny Ardant and Gérard Depardieu. A friendship born more than 40 years ago with The woman next doorfilm by François Truffaut released in 1981, and continued since… in a dozen collaborations.

For Jean Becker, this mythical couple was obvious… “Their complicity in life is also reflected in the film and it is not necessary to explain it. In Green Shuttershe behaves like a suitor towards her because he feels that she is going to escape him”, specifies the 89-year-old director at the Allociné site.

This feature film is a dive into the human soul, a fable about the life of an actor madly in love but terribly alone. We find a very touching Depardieu in a cinema that takes its time. The genius of this sacred monster, his silences, his looks, his breaths create a balance in this somewhat outdated film. Benoît Poelvoorde, playing the best friend of the actor, brings a touch of freshness which feels good in this vintage setting. Green Shuttersmade 60 years after Jean Becker’s first film (A man named La Rocca), on the latest screenplay by Jean-Loup Dabadie will have the merit, with Fanny Ardant and Gérard Depardieu, of having revived an iconic duo of French cinema.
