The Quebec College of Family Physicians (CQMF) on Thursday called for an in-depth reorganization of primary care to facilitate teamwork and allow patients to see the right professional quickly.

Although it hailed Thursday the efforts of the Quebec government to ensure better access to family physicians, the CQMF recalled that the lack of access was not due to the fact that family physicians would not work enough, but the organization of primary care modulated by the various government interventions from mandate to mandate.
The needs of the population have grown over the years, particularly with the increase in the longevity and survival of patients with chronic diseases or mental health issues.
“Unfortunately, the latter are not correctly taken into account in the mathematical logic proposed by the Minister of Health and Social Services, Christian Dubé. In fact, family physicians often address several issues within the same appointment. This is why the consultation time varies to ensure a high quality of care for the people we treat, ”the CQMF said in a press release on Thursday.
The low filling rate of residency positions in family medicine and the many retirements to come “are not without serious concern,” added the college.
More than ever, we must act in concert, favor a healthy dialogue, and promote this so important work, specified the CQMF.
