Falling Eternals Continue to Dominate North American Box Office

(Los Angeles) Proof that even Marvel superheroes can’t always defy gravity, Eternals tumbled at the North American box office, making just $ 27.5 million for its second weekend in theaters, according to provisional estimates by specialist firm Exhibitor Relations released on Sunday.

The film distributed by Disney, which had amassed 71 million from Friday to Sunday last week, thus shows one of the largest drops for a Marvel film during the second week of distribution, according to Variety.

Work by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, Eternals offers a five-star cast including actresses Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek and Gemma Chan but also the star of the series Game Of Thrones, Richard Madden, and features a brigade of time-impervious superheroes, sent by a higher force to Earth to protect humanity.

Clifford the Big Red Dog, the adventures of a giant red dog and his young mistress in New York, comes in second for its first week, with 16.4 million.

This feature film adapted from children’s books by Norman Bridwell thus records a good performance for a family film, a category particularly hard hit by the pandemic, notes the analysis David Gross.

The sector’s recovery remains tenuous, he notes, with the US box office still 35% lower compared to the same period in 2019.

In third position, Dune, an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 interstellar novel, recorded 5.5 million revenue for its fourth week in cinemas (93 million since its release).

Agent 007 continues to perform well, with 4.6 million for the sixth week of James Bond’s latest installment, No time to die (150 million in total).

He stays ahead Venom: Let There Be Carnage, in fifth place with $ 4 million in revenue. Tom Hardy returns to his role as Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist with superpowers thanks to an alien parasite called Venom.

Here is the rest of the top 10 :

  • Ron’s Gone Wrong (2.2 million)
  • The French Dispatch (1.8 million)
  • Belfast (1.8 million)
  • Spencer (1.5 million)
  • Antlers (1.2 million)
