Falco’s Top Ski Resort Unveils Exciting New Changes

Bad Gastein, once a glamorous retreat for the elite, is undergoing a revival that honors its rich history while embracing modernity. Following a period of decline, the town has attracted trendy visitors, leading to the restoration of historic hotels like the Grand Hotel and Badeschloss. Unique attractions include a therapeutic radon healing tunnel and the popular Sportgastein ski area, making it a diverse destination for relaxation and outdoor adventure.

Rediscovering Bad Gastein: From Glamour to Renewal

Located at the end of a picturesque valley, Bad Gastein has transformed from a once-glamorous rendezvous for the elite into a rejuvenated destination. Nestled behind Hofgastein and Dorfgastein, this charming locale was once the playground of royalty and the affluent, frequented by figures like Emperor Wilhelm and Empress Elisabeth, who indulged in the healing waters of Gastein. Today, it is reinventing itself while paying homage to its illustrious past.

Revitalization Efforts and Modern Attractions

As time progressed, Bad Gastein faced a decline, with its renowned spa treatments losing popularity and the area falling into disrepair. By the turn of the millennium, remnants of its former glory were evident, with dilapidated hotels and a town center characterized by neglect. However, the early 2000s marked a turning point when a wave of trendy visitors from urban centers sought respite in this hidden gem, bringing life back to the town through yoga retreats and art festivals.

In this resurgence, Hirmer Hospitality, part of the Munich-based Hirmer Gruppe, stepped in to revitalize Bad Gastein’s historic accommodations. The Grand Hotel and Badeschloss, once the social hubs of the elite, underwent significant restoration, preserving their historical significance while incorporating modern touches. The Grand Hotel Straubinger now shines with its renovated grandeur, exuding a balance of nostalgia and contemporary flair, evident in its unique dining hall decor.

The Badeschloss, originally commissioned by Archbishop Hieronymus, also welcomed a fresh design focusing on the theme of water. Guests are greeted with playful elements, like yellow rubber ducks and pool-themed decor, enhancing the charm of this beautifully restored hotel. Adjacent to this, a striking concrete tower with a rooftop infinity pool adds a modern twist to the landscape.

One of the unique offerings of Bad Gastein is the radon healing tunnel, a natural treasure discovered within the mountains. Historically, miners who worked in these regions enjoyed good health, attributed to the radon gas found underground. Today, this therapeutic tunnel provides relief to those suffering from various joint ailments, inviting visitors on a serene two-kilometer journey into the mountain’s depths.

Finally, for winter sports enthusiasts, Sportgastein emerges as a must-visit destination. Established in the 1970s, this ski area has become a prominent part of the Ski amadé network, boasting breathtaking slopes at impressive altitudes. Bad Gastein itself also offers outdoor activities, with its varying elevation presenting both a challenge and an adventure for all who explore its scenic paths.
