The prefecture of Seine-Maritime announces, this Sunday evening, that the killer whale lost for several days in the Seine, between Rouen and Le Havre, will be euthanized.
A decision made forput an end to the suffering suffered by the orca“, assures the press release. This Saturday, a rescue operation had been launched with the help in particular of bio acousticians. The objective was to guide the animal towards the sea thanks to sounds.
“This operation revealed a lack of alertness, inconsistent reactions to sound stimuli and erratic and disoriented behavior of the orca.“, explains the prefecture of Seine-Maritime.
The images captured by the SDIS76 drone show that the animal’s state of health is very critical. He would suffer in particular from mucormycosis, a skin disease which can then spread to the kidneys, lungs, heart and brain. “The disease has reached a very advanced stage, to the point of causing significant suffering to the animal“, indicates the prefecture.
The date of euthanasia of the animal is not indicated by the prefecture to avoid causing crowds.
