Fady Dagher will be the next director of the SPVM

The chief of police of the agglomeration of Longueuil, Fady Dagher, was chosen Wednesday afternoon to lead the Police Department of the City of Montreal.

The Press was able to confirm the information, first published by Radio-Canada. Mayor Valérie Plante will officially make the announcement on Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Dagher is known for having redesigned his police service in order to give more space to relations with citizens in the work of the police.

“We are changing the mandate and mission of police work,” he summed up in 2021, announcing a plan to integrate police officers into the communities in which they work. “The policeman is not a social worker, but he must be a social actor. »

The police officer was not on the radar of observers of the police scene. And for good reason: “I will not apply,” he had clearly stated at 98.5FM, in early November, when asked about his interest in the head of the SPVM.

Mr. Dagher’s appointment still needs to be approved by elected municipal officials, as well as by the Quebec government.

It is a bitter setback for the apparent favorite of the race, the current interim chef Sophie Roy, who will have to give up her position.
