Climate change and its consequences do not spare the city of love. During high tide, the gondolas must separate from their riccio, the highest part of the boat, to pass under the bridges. Some have lost it, forgotten it or had it stolen, much to the chagrin of gondola admirers.

The gondola is inseparable from Venice, one of its most beautiful postcards. Yet in recent years, she had to undergo a small metamorphosis. It was necessary to find tricks, even at the time of high tides. The riccio, the highest part of the boat is now removable. A few centimeters that make all the difference since high tides and floods are repeated in Venice. Under the bridges, we see the stigmata of the ricci. “It is difficult to pass when the water is high”admits Roberto Dal Gesso, gondolier.

The authorities recall the obligation to have a riccio

AT Venice, more and more gondolas are amputated. The riccio, supposed to be removable, has disappeared, which does not seem to worry the gondoliers. Lost, forgotten or stolen, to deal with the problem, a craftsman has found the solution. “Thanks to this hinge, they don’t have to unhook it and then put it back”, underlines Lorenzo della Toffola. Let the purists be reassured, this is not the first time that the gondola has evolved. In theory, this stern is mandatory and the authorities often remind gondoliers of this, because they value this harmony.
