Faced with housing and cost of living crises, Trudeau stays the course

As cost of living issues and housing shortages continue to be top of mind for Canadians, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is committed to maintaining his government’s current approach.

Questioned by The duty on the concrete changes to be adopted to improve the cost of living and the housing crisis, the Prime Minister responded Tuesday that he will “continue[r] to do the work.”

In Mr. Trudeau’s eyes, the various measures already implemented by his government will likely lead to a “strong economy” in the long term. He cites, for example, the “massive investments and announcements” in housing in recent months, the federal dental benefits program and agreements on daycare.

“I understand that there is still a lot of work to be done and that is exactly what we are doing. This cabinet meeting was an opportunity to continue doing the necessary work for Canadians during these difficult times,” Mr. Trudeau defended during the third day of his cabinet retreat in Montreal.

This is the second retreat of the cabinet of federal ministers focusing on economic issues. No announcement resulted from the last one, in Charlottetown, last summer.

Low in the polls

Mr. Trudeau, however, assures that “massive announcements” followed this retreat. However, the measures announced by the Liberals in the fall – the elimination of the GST on new rental housing construction projects or the updating of the Competition Act – did not help slow the Liberals’ fall. in the polls.

The Liberals are currently 17 points behind the Conservatives in most national voting intention polls.

According to Treasury Board President Anita Anand, the polls are not a concern for the government. “The premise of your question suggests that we are here to respond to poll numbers, and that is not the case,” Ms.me Anand Monday.

The leader of the Conservative Party of Canada (PCC), Pierre Poilievre, also deplored the holding of this retreat, accusing the Prime Minister of “spending a fortune” to “talk about the same things that he talks about and that he did not not managed to do for eight years.”
