“The proposal made by the President of the Republic is that there should be no limits” in France’s support for Ukraine, said national secretary of the Communist Party Fabien Roussel on Friday March 8 on franceinfo, the day after his meeting with Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée. “This means that we had to be ready to go as far as French intervention against Russia”summarized the boss of the communists, who thus confirms that the head of state accepts his remarks of February 26, when he affirmed that the sending to Ukraine, in the future, of ground troops should not “be excluded”.

Put Moscow and kyiv “around a negotiating table”

The leader of the communist deputies fears a “war escalation” which may lead to “a generalized conflict”. “Today, war escalation is done through warlike actions, through arms deliveries. And it is also done through words, through a lexical field, everyone shows their muscles and says they are ready to attack the other”he added. “This is how we gradually take the path towards generalized conflict”, he lamented. A verbal escalation that the elected official from the North regrets, considering that it was preferable to “bring together all diplomacies” to put Moscow and kyiv “around a table and start negotiations”. “When, finally, will we enter into negotiations?”he asked himself.

“The president told us that Russia is asking for a cease-fire”continued the national secretary of the PCF. “But both the President of the Republic and the Ukrainian President do not want a ceasefire at the moment”he added. “Russia is asking for a ceasefire and the President of the Republic says that it is to be able to freeze the positions and be able to rearm at the same time”, he indicated. According to Fabien Roussel, “if there was a ceasefire today, at least it would allow everyone to stop shooting at each other, to rearm if necessary, in case things started again. But at least it would allow discuss, dialogue and try to find a way out of this conflict.”

Against Ukraine’s entry into NATO

The leader of the communists also mentioned the prospect of Ukraine’s entry into NATO. He had already outlined it last summer in a letter addressed to Emmanuel Macron in which he pleaded for “a status of neutrality for Ukraine within the framework of international protection under the aegis of the UN, in return for which kyiv would renounce joining NATO”. “We know that one of the things Putin is demanding is that Ukraine not join NATO. And France’s response is to sign a treaty with President Zelensky to confirm that France supports its entry into NATO”he regretted.
