Fabien Roussel, “throws down a challenge” to Gabriel Attal. “He could say during his general policy speech that he is committed to no longer using 49.3,” suggests the national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF), Thursday January 11 on franceinfo. Élisabeth Borne, the predecessor of the new Prime Minister, used this article of the Constitution twenty-three times to have laws adopted without a vote in the National Assembly.

The new head of government does not lack options, according to the MP from the North. “Either he makes the political choice to build a national and social security budget with the right and the far right, and he will have a majority”or he makes an alliance “with the left part of the National Assembly and invests in pensions, in public services, in salaries, in the climate challenge”. In this case, “he will find a majority with us and will not need to use 49.3”.

The number one of the PCF would not refuse to enter the government if we offered him: “It all depends on the project that is put on the table. I will always respond to a request which goes in the direction of defending the interest of the country, of the workers”, he assures. But the conditions he sets are such that it is impossible for this to happen. “How can you imagine, for example, that a leader of the French Communist Party could participate in a government which would not reverse, for example, the 64-year-old reform imposed on the world of work?” he points. Reversing the latest pension reform is not in the executive’s plans.

“I have very few illusions about what Gabriel Attal will implement”, also declares Fabien Roussel. He emphasizes that “Gabriel Attal is not a virgin, young as he is, he has been a minister under Macron for six years”. For him, the governments in which the youngest head of government of the Fifth Republic participated have “stunted France”.
