“The extremes are more permeable to destabilizing, from below, political formations in Western Europe”, according to Emmanuel Véron, specialist in contemporary China, Tuesday April 23 on franceinfo. On Monday, Germany and the United Kingdom announced several arrests on suspicion of espionage within the European Parliament, including far-right elected officials.

For the specialist, “this affair reveals the abysmal dimension of the action of the Chinese secret services on European territory, and in particular in Western democracies”. He adds that China was known more for its technological and economic espionage than political ones. Beijing’s goal is to “undo the transatlantic link and bring back the Western democracies of Europe to its cause”, explains Emmanuel Véron. To do this, China is trying to move closer to more authoritarian political models, such as the extremes.

The objective of Xi Jinping’s governments is to fight against “five poisons” : activists for Taiwan independence, national minorities (Uyghurs and Tibetans), Falun Gong and supporters of democracy and Human Rights. China thus projects its domestic imperatives internationally, and also wishes to create a rupture between the Western democracies of Europe and the United States.
