Extreme cold continues across Quebec

The Siberian cold snap that has already caused several aqueduct problems throughout the province will continue on Saturday, when a wind chill of up to minus 40 is expected in several areas.

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for around 30 areas from Matagami to Grande-Rivière, via Montreal and Quebec. “Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on skin exposed to wind chill,” reads the agency’s publication.

During the night from Thursday to Friday, several temperature records have already been broken. Quebec City reported a temperature of -32.9 degrees, two degrees lower than in 1984, when a day of -30.9 degrees was recorded on January 21. “The last time we had such a cold winter was in 2004,” Jean-Philippe Bégin, meteorologist for Environment Canada, told the QMI Agency on Friday.

January 2022 has so far recorded an average of almost -12 degrees. The month should approach the “top three” without however reaching it, estimated the meteorologist.
