A condo tower of more than a hundred units located on Côte Saint-Luc Road in Montreal had to be evacuated on Friday evening due to broken heating and extreme cold.
The Montreal Fire Department was called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. because of the triggered alarm system.
The condo tower is located on chemin de la Côte-Saint-Luc, near avenue Silverson, on the border of Côte-Saint-Luc and Montreal.
On site, the first responders realized that it was very cold in the building and that there was no heating, explains Marie-Ève Beausoleil, media manager for the Fire Safety Service.
Remember that the temperature reached -35 degrees Celsius in Montreal on Friday morning, and below -40 degrees with the wind chill, according to Environment Canada.
In the large tower, only 26 units were occupied, according to Mme Beautiful sun. Several owners had already found an emergency solution by visiting friends and family. One person had to be taken to hospital as they require regular medical services. His condition is not, however, linked to the absence of heating, underlines Mme Beautiful sun.
The reason for the heater failure is not known at the time these lines were written. Already at the beginning of the week, the firefighters had been called to the same place for a heating problem, which had been resolved on Wednesday evening, in time for the cold snap, indicates Mme Beautiful sun.
On Friday evening, the water was shut off in the building and the sprinkler system drained to avoid breaks in the water pipes.
