Extortion and shootings in Montreal: police catch two suspects

Montreal police officers have caught two individuals suspected of being directly involved in extortion attempts which culminated in several shootings that have occurred in recent months in the metropolis.

The police struck early Wednesday morning, in a condo tower on René-Lévesque Boulevard, in downtown Montreal, and in two residences in the Saint-François and Saint-Vincent-de-Paul neighborhoods, Laval.

Searches were carried out there in the morning to collect evidence.

Two suspects aged in their twenties were arrested during the operation and were to be met by investigators during the day on Wednesday.

They could face various criminal charges in the near future.

According to our information, the suspects arrested are directly involved in at least three shootings that have occurred in the metropolis since the end of November.

These episodes of armed violence would take place in a context of extortion.

Two of these shootings took place on November 25. That evening, numerous shots were fired into the facade of a very luxurious residence located on Dumfries Road, in the town of Mount Royal. The huge house was targeted twice rather than once, a few hours apart. No one was injured during the event.

The other episode of gunfire took place on January 18, in the window of a commercial building in the Anjou district. The building houses the premises of the company belonging to the owner of the residence targeted by the shootings at the end of November.

According to our information, this investigation targeting extortion suspects is not completed and other arrests could take place shortly.
