Cyclone Belal: extensive damage to Mauritius – (France 2)
Cyclone Belal crossed Mauritius, which was hit hard, on Monday January 15. Roads were flooded within minutes, trapping motorists.
Carried away by a torrent, a motorist climbed onto the roof to escape his drifting car. Monday January 15, Mauritius was surprised by the intensity of Cyclone Belal and its winds of 110 km/h. Near the capital, Port Louis, roads were flooded within minutes and streets were quickly transformed into swollen rivers. A strong swell of five to seven meters hit the entire coastline.
The strength of the cyclone was not anticipated according to the authorities
Submersive waves also affected many tourist complexes on the island. Bad weather caused the death of a motorcyclist. Tuesday January 16 in the morning, the situation became a little calmer. “Since noon, Mauritian time, the alert has been lifted, we can finally go out“, indicates Laura Bacca, journalist at France Télévisions. On the island the damage seems significant. The authorities deplore that the weather services did not sufficiently anticipate the trajectory of the cyclone and its strength.
